This caucus season, Iowans vote for health

In less than a week, Iowa will launch the 2012 presidential nominating process with its first-in-the-nation caucuses. Republican presidential candidates are practically bumping into each other as they criss-cross the state this week — Michelle Bachmann, Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich and more have stopped by Hy-Vee stores to shake hands and ask for votes. (With their nomination a foregone conclusion, the Democrats are mostly sitting out the caucuses this year.)

With the eyes of the nation on Iowa this week, the Healthiest State Initiative is urging Iowans to cast their votes as well — for wellness. This week, eight of  Des Moines’ most popular independent restaurants are offering special entrees that are not only good, they’re good for you. Salmon Cioppino, Chicken and Couscous, Spicy Vegetable Tofu … signature dishes that prove eating healthy doesn’t have to be bland and boring.

If you’re in the Des Moines area, drop by at one of these participating restaurants and thank the proprietors for supporting Iowa’s campaign to become the healthiest state in the nation. And even if you can’t make it in person, you can still vote for your favorite healthy entree … and maybe win one of two $50 restaurant gift certificates! Details are on the Heathiest State Initiative website: www.iowahealthieststate.com
